Kawaii-B: Caring for your Wig!

This article will teach you how to properly got the most out of your wig, helping it last longer and look even cuter! This article is written as a guide for our customers, but also anyone else who owns a wig too!

After getting your wig

1. When first opening your wig, it may have a strange smell - don't worry! This will go away it is simply proctective dusts/sprays used by mafuacturors to keep the wig as nice as possilbe in transit!

2. Gently shake your wig for at least a minute. This will help make the hair fall in a more natural way when putting it on. You should do this every time you put the wig on.

3. It is a good idea to wash your wig before wearing it for the first time if you have sensitive skin (make sure you use products made for wigs! Read more below).

4. Brush your wig gently with a wide tooth comb or wide tooth brush. Normal brushes can pull out fibres from your wig, so a wide tooth one is better.

Styling your Wig

1. Be CAREFUL when heat styling your wig. ONLY use heat styling when your wig specifically says it contains heat resistant fibres, and always style on the lowest heat setting possible, below 160 degrees.

2. When brushing, brush gently to prevent pulling hair out of the wig.

3. Some styling products designed for human hair will not work right on synthetic wigs because they work by attaching to proteins in human hair, which synthetic wigs don't have. Products like oils, waxes and gels will usually not work well unless they are specially designed for wigs.

One product that is tried and tested is the GOT2B Glued range. It is well known to be a good choice for wig styling in the cosplay community.

4. You will want to store your wigs on a wig stand, the help them keep their shape. If you can't do that, store them gently rolled inside a cotton bag if possible. Also, if you have longer hair, you will need a wig cap. Wig caps help you keep your hair flat under the wig to create a more realistic look!

Washing Your Wig

1. A wig should be washed about every 8 - 10 times you wear it, but you should be able to tell when a wig needs washing.

2. Always wash your wigs very gently! Do not brush them while they are wet, and don't squeeze or wring them.

3. Only use plain warm water (not hot) and shampoo that is made for wigs to wash your wigs.
4. Allow wigs to air dry on a wig stand

Colours!!! They're dark or light and even vivid. When it comes to wearing clothes bold and bright there's always the fear of looking like a traffic light or just plan weird. Never fear!!! You can wear bold and bright and still look immensely cute. It's all to do with complimenting colours with the right amount of accessories with a complimentary hairstyle.

Best area to start is by looking at the colour wheel. Combing colours it's good to look at complimentary, split complimentary and triad colours.

Complementary Colours

The complementary colours are the colours which are directly opposite from one another on the colour wheel. Complementary colours are contrasting and stand out against each other. Often it is a good idea to use a complementary colour as the hightlight colour, as described above.

Split Complementary Colours

Split complementary is a colour and the analogous colours to its complement colour. Using split complementary colours can give you a design with a high degree of contrast, yet still not as extreme as a real complementary colour. Italso results in greater harmony than the use of the direct complementary.

Triad Colours

Triad colors are three hues equidistant on the colour wheel. When you want a design that is colourful and yet balanced, a triad colour scheme might be the way to go.

Knowing how the colour wheel works out buying and putting together an outfit shouldn't be a problem. It's easy to find bright bold coloured clothes. Even if they're plain a visit to the craft store could help to solve your problem of making it as cute as possible. Wigs!!! Some people love them, some people hate them. It's a great alternative to having your hair go through the harsh chemical process of changing colour and it's a lot cheaper as well. The biggest issue that arises from wanting a wig is choosing one that will suit you the best. This article will hopefully give those who are looking to buy a wig but are unsure as to how to go about it.

Face Shape

Everyone has a different face shape and the shape that you have helps when choosing the wig that's right for you. Here's a run down of the wig types that might best fit your face shape.

Oval shaped - Well aren't you a lucky girl! There is no limit to hairstyles for your face shape! You can pull of nearly any hairstyle or hair shape!
Square shape - The best hairstyle for your facial shape is something with a lot of texture. Curls or choppy ends or even short spiky cuts. Avoid the blunt cut bang hairstyles.
Long shape - You'll be looking for a wig that doesn't drag down your face and adds length. Be sure to add some brow-skimming bangs. A chin length bob wig will help create the illusion on width but be sure to avoid the pixie cut.
Heart shaped - Look for a wig that brings some hair onto the forehead, while keeping the hair close to the head at the eyes. The wig should also be fuller at the jaw and below and in front of the earlobes.
Round shape - What you need to do is to make your face appear longer and leaner, and to do this you'll need a wig with less volume around the face. A shoulder length wig with added soft graduated layers is your ideal style. You can have bangs if you like.
Rectangular shape - Much like the long shape only with a square jawline. The best style for your face shape is the one with lots and lots of volume. Layers around your chin can soften the harsh lines and a little bit volume on the sides will help you create the illusion of a wider face.
Pear-shaped - Look best with full layered looks that add width and volume from the eyes to the crown to balance out the face, such as the classic shag style. Choose a wig that adds width and fullness at the sides by incorporating soft curls and waves, as well as any wig that would minimize the vertical length of the face.

Wig Size

To measure for a wig, use a flexible seamstress measuring tape. Start at the forehead and measure around the head. Start just above the eyebrows and follow the hairline around, taking caution to go behind the ears. Continue until the start is reached, and that measurement is the head circumference.

Consider fiber type: synthetic vs. human hair wigs

Many think that human hair wigs will be more natural looking. Many also assume that synthetic wigs will look synthetic when worn however they are the most popular because they require the least amount of care. Today's synthetic wigs offer more styling choices, colours and unique comfort features. Synthetic styles are easy to pack and take with you, and the fiber is resistant to humidity, so your style holds in any weather. One thing that's important to remember is that you should always check what your wig is made of before heat styling! Some synthetic fibres can be styled at low heat, others can't. Any heat source, such as a blow dryer - or even an open oven - can damage the fiber and ruin a PVC based wig.

Synthetic
Synthetic hair is commonly made from kanekalon or toyokalon fibers. Kanekalon is a light, long-lasting synthetic fiber that withstands repeated washings and low-temperature heat styling. The downside to kanekalon is its tendency to tangle and mat.

Toyokalon is a softer synthetic hair fiber that tangles less, but lacks the natural look and color of kanekalon fiber.

Monofiber (monofibre) is the highest quality synthetic hair, with a realistic look and feel. Monofilament hair behaves more like natural hair than the other synthetic hair fibers.

Human
Human hair wigs are extremely versatile. You can curl and style them as you would your own hair. Because they do not come pre-styled, they require more effort and care than synthetic wigs. Human hair wigs are ideal if you enjoy, and are skilled at, styling your own hair.

Human hair wigs often last longer than synthetic ones, and can be dyed and bleached unlike synthetic wigs, but as newer more advanced materials are used to create synthetic wigs, and they look increasingly like human hair, many are choosing to save money and opt for synthetic.

If you have very sensitive skin, a human wig might be better for you, as some synthetic wigs can cause skin irritation, if not worn with a quality wig cap.

Consider your lifestyle

What does your typical day involve? Will you be wearing your wig every day, or only occasionally? These questions, as well as others concerning your work, recreational and social activity, may affect which style you choose. Be sure to keep your typical daily or weekly activities in mind as you try different wigs.

Customizing your style

Unless you're comfortable or have done so before then it might be ideal to take your wig to your hairstylist and have them trim the bangs and sides to suit your face. If you plan on colouring a human hair wig, that is also something that your hairstylist might be able to do for you as well. When buying a wig the goal is to find a shade that complements your skin tone and brings out your natural colour. Don't be afraid to experiment with colours!!! It's all about trying out something new and different.
