All About: Otome Kei

What is Otome Kei?
The word "Otome" means "Young lady" in Japanese.

This street style has an feminine, cute look, focusing on dressing like a young lady as the name may suggest.

Lolita's occasionally change to dressing in Otome since there are no strict rules or guidelines to follow.

Otome is often mistaken for Casual Lolita. However there are a few differences

Each outfit is unique to the wearer. Otome is more about the feel you get from the outfit than the actual clothes.

What’s the difference between otome kei and lolita fashion?

In Lolita a petticoat is required to make the shape of the bell skirt, and create the distinctive look. However Otome is more toned down and there are fewer rules to what makes an outfit Otome kei, giving the wearer more freedom.

An Otome outfit can also include trousers, colours can be mismatched or matching, the feel of the outfit is more comfortable, while still looking cute and

lolita-eqsue.

Fairy Kei In Winter - Style Tips

It's November and the weather is starting to get colder.

This time of the year people may want to just keep warm instead of Kawaii with layers of coats, boots, scarfs and mundane clothes.

However you can still dress up cute, you can still look Kawaii while trying to keep warm.

In this article will be some tips for wearing Fairy Kei in Winter.

What is Fairy Kei?

Fairy Kei ("Fairy Fashion") is a Japanese Street fashion made out of pastel colours (Although dark colours can still be used). More and more people oversea's have started wearing the style, and it has quickly become the most popular kawaii style, after lolita.

The style is easily confused with similair styles such as Pop Kei or Decora. To find out more about Fairy Kei, click here to read our All About post!

Now onto the keep warm tips!

Layers!
The style itself often consists of layers so adding extra to keep warm won't look out of place. Layering can also be pretty simple if you have a pre-existing Fairy Kei wardrobe. If you don't, some good places to start buying some clothes for layering are: Spreepicky, Himi store, Maniaq and MilkLim.

Boots
Boots will help keep your feet/legs warm and can also look cute with Fairy Kei.

There are also some Gyau brands that have brought out shoes which would look cute with Fairy.

Leg warmers!

Kawaii-B All About: Fairy Kei

Fairy kei is a Japanese street fashion style, that has recently exploded in popularity all across the world. With its sweet pastel colour palette similar to that of sweet lolita, it is all about being cute, sweet and you guessed it... fairy like!

Fairy Kei often includes elements of Decora and is often confused with the Pop Kei and Party Kei styles, but they all have their staples which set them apart. Fairy kei is not the same as Pop Kei!

Fairy Kei outfits are made up almost purely of pastels, including light pink, blue, yellow and purple as the most common. White is also used to balance out candy colours. Darker colours are almost never seen as part of a fairy kei outfit.

Fairy Kei looks often also include elements of the 80's like leg warmers, and vintage cutesy designs like Barbie, Care Bears, Polly Pocket and other characters. These often cross over into Pop Kei and Spank! type outfits as well. Let's just take a quick look at the difference between these!

Clashing patterns and darker colours including black, shows a pop kei kind
of look to these outfits. The graphic patterns add to the "pop" feel, even though the girl on the
left has fairy coloured accessories and skirt.

The inclusion of darker purples, as well as black tell us this isn't
a fairy kei outfit, but what makes this Spank! look is the vintage jumper, but
most of all the polka dot skirt. Spank! style is also more to do with
wearing pre-owned clothing as opposed to brand new.

This outfit is typical Fairy Kei. What make this fairy kei, is the all pastels
colour palette, and the fluffy and floaty textures of the skirt and jumper.

One more style often confused and mixed in with Fairy Kei is Cult Party Kei. Cult Party Kei is all about layering
floaty skirts, dresses and outer garments. Often with a very light coloured palette, and include a lot of chiffon!

Of course it is up to you how you wear a style! Mixtures of Pop, Cult and Fairy Kei are very common, but now you know how to tell them apart!

So when building you fairy outfit, don't just focus on colour, think about texture. Also, oversized garments and jumpers add a really cute look especially if the jumper is fluffy. Or even a fluffy pastel scarf can add a different texture and feel to your outfit!

Kawaii interview: Kelsey Kimono Time

Hi there Kelsey, we're so happy to have you do this interview with us, thank you! To start, tell us a little about you! (just for those who don't know from youtube already, how old you are, where you're from and what you do when you aren't being a Kawaii superstar!)

Hi! My name's Kelsey Ellison, I'm 22 years old and I'm from Barnsley in the U.K. I cover Jpop and Kpop on youtube (https://www.youtube.com/user/KimonoTime) and I also just released a single called "Pom Pom" which was greatly inspired by those styles. I'm way too obsessed with alpaca plushies and bourbon biscuits.

1. Okay on to the questions! Where would you say your love of Kawaii fashion came from/started (was it anime? manga? j-pop etc..?), and who is your biggest inspiration right now?

I was obsessed with Gwen Stefani when I was younger and I loved the Harajuku girls style. That's where it all really started! My biggest inspiration right now is not just one thing or person, but I just love looking at street style in Japan and Korea.

2. Can you tell us about your performing journey so far? (where did your performing begin, and how did your online journey begin? was it with your Nyan Cat dance cover 3 years ago, or maybe something before that none of us know about?) and what do you remember about the time you started making youtube videos/doing stuff online?

I've been performing since I was 5 years old! I started at dance school, and then at around 11 I joined a musical theatre school. At 16, I decided I wanted to perform for a living, so I went to a musical theatre college called S.L.P in Leeds. It was when I was at college, that I found out about jpop dancing online. I loved Jpop and performing, so I thought it would be a perfect little hobby to do! I can remember me filming my first dance video. I'd seen a cover of someone dancing to Hare Hare Yukai and discovered the whole jpop dance culture online. Then my friend told me to watch Beckii Cruel's documentary and I got really inspired to try it out. It was summer in 2010 and I borrowed my friends school like jacket and filmed the dance in my bedroom in only two shots because it was so warm! When I uploaded it, I was so nervous and I didn't know if I was just being stupid. I didn't tell any of my friends or family I had uploaded it, so I was shocked when it got a couple of hundred views in the first few days!

3. What things other than dancing, j-poping and generally being super kawaii do you get up to in your spare time, and what are you up to at the moment?

Since I've finished college/university I'm not studying anymore. I am studying Japanese and Korean though. I spend a lot of time making things for my videos, putting set lists together for performances and creating new ideas so it takes up a lot of my time. But I do love just chilling and watching a new TV series, or shopping for new clothes in my spare time!

4. You have many talents! You're a dancer and a singer ( with a musical theatre degree already! Go you!) - if you could have your dream job what would it be? What are your dreams for the next few years?

My ultimate dream is to travel and perform at the same time! So I'm going to go all out and try my best to make that happen!

5. Can you tell us a nice memory you have linked to a particular outfit and why that memory is special to you? (if you have a pic thats great)

The outfit I picked is when I worked for a concept magazine called SYPM (shut your pretty mouth) at London Fashion Week. I had so much fun working, and dressing in my own style, and it reminds me of my fun days in London when I used to live there.

6. Your pretty famous now ~ what is your experience of other people within the Kawaii community? And what is it like to have so many fans?

I don't think I am compared to a lot of youtubers! But the kawaii community is very unique and exciting! Everyone has the same interests so it's easy to make friends.

I'm just grateful and surprised that a lot of people want to watch me doing what I love! Youtube-ing was and still is my most fun hobby and I always forget I have an audience until I go to events and people know me!

7. Whats the most surprising thing a fan/someone has done for you/sent you?

I'm always surprised when people send me fan art. I can't believe people would want to spend their time and efforts drawing me!

8. If you had a super-power what would it be and why?

To speak every language in the world, because I could make so many more friends and when I travel I could have so much more fun!

9. Favorite foods? And a food you HATE!

I love katsu curry and dairy milk chocolate! I really hate tuna and mayonnaise!

10. What's your favorite thing to curl up under a blanket and watch?

Buffy The Vampire Slayer, the TV series.

11. You perform at a lot of events all over the country ~ so far what has been your favorite performing experience and why?

I've loved every single one and all of them I have great memories with. I really loved the audience when I performed at ALcon though! They were so into it and I had lighting and people had glow sticks, it was so much fun!

12. What kind of things inspire you to create your outfits/how do you put things together? Do you have a process? What are your favorite styles?

I usually get inspired by music videos or images I see on tumblr. When I get up in the morning, I kind of dress to my mood. If I'm feeling girly, I'll wear something pink and I'll curl my hair. If I'm feeling more cool or I'm dancing that day, I like to wear something more boyish and 2NE1 style. I love so many styles, I couldn't pick one, but I do love mixing girly colours and making it a bit more cool!

13. If you were asked to explain what is so great about Kawaii/Japanese fashion and culture to someone from another planet, what would you say? What is it you love about it?

What's so great about it is that there are no limits! And like I said, you can dress to your mood. You can be creative in what you wear, and it's never a chore getting ready! They are all the reasons why I love it so much!

14. If this same alien abducted all of your possessions, but let you keep 3 things what would they be?

My alpacas, my laptop and my bed!

15. Do you have a favorite accessory or piece of clothing out of all of your super cute stuff? If so what is it and why? (link me a pic if you can Black heart (cards)

I love everything I own or else I wouldn't have got it! I tend to have a favourite as soon as I've bought it and then something else a few months later. At the moment it's this kawaii cheerleader set I got from Glitters For Dinner.

16. Do you see yourself always being a youtuber?

I think one day I will stop eventually, but I'm going to carry on doing it as long as I love it! I may not do jpop/kpop covers forever, but I love vlogging and documenting my life, because it's always nice to look back on. So I may stop when I'm 30, I may stop when I'm 80! It all depends on circumstances in life and whether I enjoy it still. But for now I'm loving it, so I don't think it ill be anytime soon!

17. Finally, what would you say to anyone interested in kawaii fashion/culture who might be nervous? Or perhaps to a budding singer/dancer/youtuber?

Just go for it! It was the best decision I ever made in my life, it gave me new friends and it really helped me become the more confident and true to self person I am today! The first video or photo is always the most nerve wrecking, but if you don't try, you'll never know. If you try and don't like it, at least you know instead of regretting years later. There are tons of lovely people out there that are friendly and supportive, and of course there are negative people online, but that's life! It shouldn't be about views and fans, it should be about having fun! If you're not having fun, there is no point! Even if it's just 5 people following you, that's 5 lovely people who support you!

And I'm so happy that you're interviewing me! Thank you so much~Im very flattered (◡‿◡✿)

Well! Hello everyone, I'm Prince~ I'm a 19 year old pastel kid that resides in the United States. I love bright and colorful street fashions like fairy kei, decora, lolita, ect and overall I just like to have a lot of fun ;A; I watch a lot of anime and read a lot of comic books and although I spend most of my time working I hope to be able to pursue fashion as a career one day c: Thank you all so much for being interested in this interview about me~~! ´ ▽ ` )ﾉ

1. Okay on to the questions! Where would you say your love of Kawaii fashion came from/started, and who is your biggest inspiration right now?

I think I would say my love of kawaii fashion really started with my love of anime... Or at least, that's really how I discovered it! I loved some of the cute outfits seen in a lot of popular anime and then my friend had introduced me into lolita fashion (it was all downhill from there! hah!). I was really curious so I read a lot of the Gothic Lolita Bibles and FRUiTS magazines and then ended up doing a school project on general harajuku fashion. I was really attracted to all of the colors and creativity and it just made me really happy.

Right now my biggest inspirations are Haruka Kurebayashi and a harajuku deco girl, Creamy Sauce! She has a really bright, fun style that's inspired me a lot in some of my most recent decora looks. I originally discovered her from Tokyo Fashion, but I also follow her on twitter~!

2. If you were asked to explain what is so great about wearing Kawaii/decora fashion to someone from another planet, what would you say?

Oh what a fun question! Well first I hope that alien speaks English! ╮(─▽─)╭

I think I would tell them that kawaii fashion is truly great because it spreads happiness wherever I go! All of the vibrant colors and cute accessories make me feel very magical- like I'm living in a fantasy world. I think at times life can get a little bland or boring, so these cute fashions really make living a fun adventure.

3. Can you tell us a nice memory you have linked to a particular outfit and why that memory is special?

You know, I had trouble picking a specific one because I have so many lovely memories paired with some super cute outfits- But I think if I had to decide on one I would pick one of my first few times wearing hime fashion~! Some of my friends and I got together for dinner at my favorite japanese restaurant to celebrate my birthday, and it was genuinely such a heart warming experience. To spend the evening with all of those cuties that I really care about made the experience so worthwhile~ It was also really cool because we are essentially all apart of different harajuku sub-fashions? (for ex: one friend was in a creepy cute decora look, my girlfriend was in lolita, I was in gyaru ect)

4. What is your experience of other people within the Kawaii community?

I have met so many different kinds of people in the Kawaii Community! I'm happy to say that so far my experience with everyone has been almost all positive. Of course occasionally you'll meet people who don't just click with you, but besides that I've found myself meeting some truly extraordinary people and I'm really blessed to have made some strong friendships along the way. I think the most exciting thing about all of the different people is the fact that everyone brings something really unique to the community. There are so many different kinds of kawaii fashions and so many unique styles and it's a really great experience to learn and be inspired by the different people that I've met.

5. If you had the chance to wear any piece of clothing/any outfit on earth, what would it be?

Oh gosh, anything on earth...? That's a lot of different options! Well... It may seem a little lame if I can really choose anything, but I would probably wear Vivienne Westwood's Melissa Winged Rocking Horse Shoes- in a heartbeat, actually! Even though they're extremely accessible (comparatively to some things, that is) I have so much trouble finding them in my size and they've been my dream shoes for years now! I would be so happy if I could finally own them~

6. If you had a super-power what would it be and why?

I've thought about this question a lot and oh gosh I have no idea. Could transporting myself into video games be considered a super power? Because if so I'd definitely love to do that ლ(́◉◞౪◟◉‵ლ)

7.Okay, so a little more personal. We and your fans understand you call yourself "genderqueer" (for those who don't know this means someone prefers to not be called he or she and feel more comfortable not in one or the other). For anyone else out there who might feel the same as you do, or thinks they might be "genderqueer" too, can you tell us a little about your journey?

Ah, yeah sure! Honestly if I were to discuss my full journey it would be way too long of an answer so I'll try to sum it up a bit! I guess growing up there was something that always felt a little... different. And truly it's hard to piece together with words, but for a while I just felt very out of place with my peers and I guess I felt out of place in my own body as well. And unfortunately as a kid there was never really a word for being genderqueer. Of course people were feeling similarly to me, but it wasn't until these past few years that I discovered my gender was really a thing (and I wasn't.. crazy?)- and it made me feel a little more comfortable, a little more safe. Essentially, I feel like as a child we're taught that there are two genders and gender is very black and white: male, and female. But with gender (just as sexuality!) there's a lot of grey area and I always fell in the grey area.

There are many different branches and subcategories when it comes to nonbinary gender but personally for me I'm still a little grey. I definitely don't identify as female so to keep it simple I just have everyone use "they/them/their" pronouns when referring to me.

So far all of my friends have been incredibly supportive and try their best to recognize my gender. There are definitely days when I feel defeated, but..! Just like many other things, my gender is simply another thing that I have yet to explore. There's no rush, and I'm okay with that.

8. Has Kawaii fashion helped you? And if so how?

Kawaii fashion has helped me in many different ways, but when it comes to gender I'm not so sure. In the beginning to be quite honest, it really confused me further. I guess growing up in a traditional household I felt like only girls could appreciate such cute fashions... Well! Hah! How different am I now! Today I'm a huge advocate of the idea that all types of people should be able to dress in cute no matter what.

When it comes to other areas of my life though, kawaii fashion has made me more confident and has increased my self-love and self-worth.

9. What advice would you give anyone who feels they might be "genderqueer"?

First: What you're feeling is not wrong. You are not wrong.
As I said earlier that was a huge issue for me in the beginning- I really just did feel wrong. A little crazy, even. But it's perfectly alright to be questioning your gender! If you're feeling like you might be genderqueer there is nothing wrong with exploring a little further and testing out your feelings. Nobody can really tell you if you are or aren't but it might help talking it out with a friend if you're not sure. And if you are sure and you know for a fact you're genderqueer, then hell keep doing what you're doing and be the fabulous person that you are ;3; You know, every single person is incredibly unique. And I don't want to sound too corny (although I know I've sounded amazingly corny in other parts of the interview already) but the cool thing about being human is that we're all born so different and we grow up to be such incredible individuals. It's perfectly fine not to fit in the gender binary. As long as you're being you that's all that matters.

10. Okay! Back to the fun questions! Favorite foods? And a food you HATE!

I will eat literally almost anything (within my diet that is! I can't eat wheat or milk ;3;) but the one thing I cant stand are tomatoes please don't feed me tomatoes I may cry ;__; For my favorite foods though! I love tacos, tator tots, and thai red curry! It's really just a coincidence that everything happens to start with the letter 't' I don't know how that happened *o*

11. What's your favorite thing to curl up under a blanket and watch?

Lately my go-to cartoon has been Bob's Burgers~! It always cheers me up~! But I usually end up curling under my blankets and rewatching favorite series like Paradise Kiss, K-On!, ect on a bad day ; u ;

12. What kind of things inspire you to create your amazing outfits/how do you put things together?

Right now I'm really into the kawaii sub-fashion mahou kei! It's a fashion similar to fairy kei but with more magical girl themes and so lately my biggest inspiration for my coordinates have been magical girls! I like to imagine what I might look like if I had a magical girl transformation and try to coordinate around that. ಥ⌣ಥ

13. If you had 3 versions of yourself, what careers would you follow?

That's actually really ironic because originally during school I was trying to pick between three different majors- painting, illustration, or fashion design! I could definitely imagine myself going down either three of those paths- but If I was to choose 3 very different versions of myself... One would be who I am now pursuing fashion and illustration- another I think I would probably pursue floriculture and create vast gardens! And lastly I would probably want to be a baker and have a cute sweets shop ;A;

14. Do you have a favorite accessory out of all of your super cute stuff? If so what is it and why? (you can link me a pic)

Oh yes I definitely do~! My favorite accessory is this huge bow I actually bought off of lolita sales! It's made by Candyholic but honestly I'm not quite sure if their shop still makes anything ;3; This is what it looks like~ (As a heads up: the photo actually does not belong to me! I only have pictures of me wearing it in decora so this is the photo that Cadney used when I purchased it from her. I hope that's alright!)But you'll definitely see me sporting it in almost all of my decora looks. Its so huge an OTT that it feels like it was made for me~! My most recent use of it was at Zenkaikon 2014 ;^;

15. Finally, what would you say to anyone interested in kawaii fashion/culture who might be nervous to start?

To anyone interested in kawaii fashion~! I know it's definitely a bit scary to start, but I can honestly say these fashions have brought me a lot of joy. I think it's really important in life to pursue what will make you happy regardless of what people tell you because your own happiness is truly important! If you're too afraid to make a bold start you can always begin by slowly incorporating kawaii culture into your life one step at a time. And remember! Have fun with it~! Experiment with different things and find what works best for you. I'm not going to lie- you will definitely come across people that don't appreciate your style but at the end of the day it's your own opinion of yourself that matters. So~! Have fun! Be creative~ (and maybe a little crazy~) Never take yourself too seriously~~ (≧◡≦)
